An Introduction into the History of the Emerald Gemstone by John S Stewart
Emerald provides a jewellery piece containing a birthstone gem that will bring good luck and protection. Monthly birthstones symbolize the birth month, according to the Gregorian calendar.
Emeralds are the gemstone related to May, the Zodiac gem for cancer and represent all kinds of anniversaries for 35.
EMERALD - HISTORY, LEGEND and LORE
Emerald occurs most often in mica schists of metamorphic-hydrothermal origin wherein the schists and other associated host rocks formed by chemical interaction between granitic rocks or pegmatites and the enclosing basic (silica-deficient) rocks. The chemical ingredients necessary for the formation of beryl frequently migrate from the granitic material into the adjoining basic rocks where the beryl crystallizes, changing the original basic rock composition through the process known as exometamorphism. If the basic rocks contain the elements chromium or vanadium, small amounts of these elements may be incorporated into the beryl structure thereby giving the intense green colour characteristic of the gem beryl variety Emerald.
Some of the deposits of the world's most famous emerald mines in Columbia are of hydrothermal origin, where mineral water is heated or gas is heated from deep igneous sources later cooled and crystallized along fractures in carbonate rocks. Associated minerals in these deposits are pyrite, dolomite, calcite, quartz and albite.
The relatively high hardness of Emerald along with its weight, makes it commonly found in alluvial and eluvial deposits.
Emeralds are generally recognized by their colour, shape, hardness and density.
They were kept in the crown jewels, and decorated the thrones of some of the oldest dynasties in history. As a symbol of wealth and power, they are unmatched. Their bright green glow is more valuable than gold and diamonds per carat and these beads are one of the most expensive in the world. They are emeralds, one of the most precious of all gems.
If you were lucky enough to have an Emerald that fits in the palm of your hand, it may, depending on its quality, be worth over a million pounds. Why so high price? Much of the reason is that emeralds are rare gems. Emerald crystal is a type of Beryl. It consists of a combination of aluminum and silicon common with beryllium, a rare element. Small amounts of trace elements, chromium or vanadium is, give it a distinctive emerald green.
Global source of supply has traditionally been Egypt. For thousands of years the famous mines of Cleopatra, about 440 kilometers southeast of Cairo, were worked by the Egyptians and the Romans and Turks after. Working long hours under the scorching heat of the sun, and darkness, heat and dust, in underground mines must have been a real ordeal for older workers. However, the mines were worked continuously since about 330 BC to 1237 AD.
In ancient times, emeralds have held a great fascination for ALL the people. In addition to their exquisite beauty, they were coveted for their supposed magical powers and healing. Emeralds were actually considered a cure for many diseases. They were also believed to be able to increase fertility and sexual desire in women. Because of this claim, emeralds were highly sought after and profitable trade was established between Egypt and as far away as India.
The Egyptian monopoly on the world supply of Emeralds lasted right up until the Sixteenth Century. It was then that the Spanish Conquistadores arrived in South America. In 1558 the Spaniards located a mine at Muzo, near Columbia. There they discovered emeralds of breathtaking size and beauty. The Spaniards wasted no time in capitalizing on this find. They promptly seized the mine and enslaved the local population. These slaves were then forced to do the back breaking work of extracting the gems from the mine. Soon a vast supply of large, fine emeralds were being shipped to Europe. These jewels soon found their way into the hands of many of the ruling Empires around Europe and the Middle East. The Ottoman Turks, the Persian Shahs and even the royalty of India were featuring delicately sculpted emeralds as the showpieces of their jewel collections.
One of the ironies of modern jewellery is that people who work so hard for to mine them, are often barely able to buy food to survive, much less be able to buy an emerald to wear. No wonder, is there an overwhelming temptation for workers to hide contraband gems from emerald mines. This led to an unprecedented level of security guards armed with machine guns in order to control all movements of workers. Despite this however, there is a flourishing trade in smuggled emeralds in the black market. In fact, according to an article in National Geographic, the majority of the Emeralds are not recorded, duty free, invisible, hidden in the global trading market and called "black". Almost all high-quality emeralds have been smuggled at some point in their history.
I sincerely hope you find this short article involving Emeralds and Emerald Jewellery interesting, and may be it can even be of some help to you in some way.
Very best regards,
JSS
