Proof Reading - Who Takes Responsibility? by George W Dawn
I was recently called by someone who had received a mailing from us; she wanted to see me because she had fallen out with her printer and was looking for a change. When I arrived for the appointment the prospect explained to me that she had asked her printer to print some postcards but that the postcode in her address was printed incorrectly so - as they had the wrong information - they were unusable.
She was very disappointed to find that the printer would not take responsibility for the error which she thought was unreasonable.
At this point I asked the question: Did the printer supply a proof to check?
It turned out that the printer had indeed supplied a proof and that the client had signed to say that, after checking, all was well and the job was good to print.
At this point I explained that the standard terms of service for trade printers are that final proof is with the client. This means that once the proof has been checked by the customer the responsibility for proof checking rests completely with the customer for any errors not pointed out.
The printer's client explained to me that she had only looked through the job to see if it looked alright and hadn't checked the proof in detail - after all wasn't that the printer's responsibility?
I had no choice at this point but to tell her that when we say that the client bears responsibility for any errors not marked for correction by the client in proof checking this really does mean any errors - however silly they may appear later. A professional printer does not want to allow errors through and often goes to great lengths to avoid them but sometimes things slip past the most careful eye.
Despite the natural impetus to trade felt by any business principal, this was a prospect I had to leave. It may be possible to find a designer or printer who will be prepared to takes responsibility for a project and who will re-print a job without charge if errors are not noticed at proof but this will come at an appreciable increase in cost.
