A Postcard from the Tropics by Bob Greene
To celebrate her success, Patti Goodwin, who has dropped 50 pounds so far, joined nine other Best Life members for a cruise to the Bahamas. Below, she shares her experiences and offers some encouraging advice.
Dear Best Lifers,
What a great time we had! I cruised with nine other ladies I'd met on the message board here. It was so amazing to meet them all face to face for the first time, even though it was really just like meeting old friends. These ladies were from coast-to-coast in Canada; three women from British Columbia, one from Alberta, five from Ontario and myself, from Nova Scotia.
I left my home in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, drove to Halifax and picked up my friend from Alberta. We planned out our drive, taking four days to travel from Halifax to Orlando, stopping in Reading, Pennsylvania, to meet another friend from the Best Life message board. Then we went to Disney World and met up with Meghan Zimolka, who was also featured as a Success Story on the site. She and I had been chatting with some of the other Best Life Successes and when we realized we were going to be there at the same time, we decided to meet up with each other.
The cruise was a definite challenge food-wise, but I managed really well by using portion control and the hunger scale. I had gotten some great cruise suggestions from one of the Best Life nutritionists, Stephanie, and her ideas really helped. Sticking to my regular mealtimes, especially having a good breakfast, asking for food prepared the way I wanted, looking for spa/light choices on the menu, avoiding frozen drinks, keeping healthy snacks handy so I did not get too hungry and reminding myself that good choices were there all helped keep me on track. We also stayed very active: We took the stairs instead of the elevators and did lots of walking. We even participated in a walk "On Deck for the Cure," which was quite an emotional experience as Mary-Lynn Campbell, one of the women in our group, is a breast cancer survivor.
While on the ship, I finally had the chance to hire a personal trainer; there are none available in the small town where I live so that was one of my "treats." Wow, did she make me work! But I really enjoyed the workout and the knowledge I gained. She made me realize that I needed to push myself further than I was in my workout. I thought I had been doing that, but soon realized I could do far more than I was. She also gave me some information regarding abdominal surgeries that I'd had and the effect they were having on my ab workouts. In the two weeks that I was away from home (seven days on the ship, the rest of the time on the road), I even managed to lose four pounds.
I am so grateful to the Best Life program for putting me in contact with all of these ladies. The friendships we've formed and the support we've been able offer each other have been so helpful on this journey! I am continuing to get closer to my goal. It's always a struggle with the final 10 pounds, but I am hoping this cruise has given me the boost I need to get the job done!
When I started Best Life plan, I slowly began to realize this was not going to be a quick fix. I was going to be changing my life, not just going on a diet. With all of the emotional baggage I had carried for so many years, this journey was going to take time. I could not look at reaching my goal as the only measure of success, so I have been working toward
